Pathology Residency Program

Penrose Hospital offers an accredited four-year training program in combined anatomic and clinical pathology. The Penrose residency program is a unique community-based program that develops well-rounded anatomic and clinical pathologists. The program focuses on specific teaching and management skills to prepare the residents for leadership in a university or community practice.  The program will expand to seven residents in July of 2009 and eight in July 2011.

Penrose-St. Francis Health Services consists of Penrose Hospital and St. Francis Medical Center. Training occurs almost exclusively at Penrose Hospital, the 364-bed anchor hospital of Penrose-St. Francis Health Services, providing secondary and tertiary medical-surgical services and specializing in cancer care, cardiac care, emergency trauma care, and physical rehabilitation. The Cancer Center at Penrose Hospital provides exposure to an increasing number of unusual cases seen in the Pathology department.

Residents play an active teaching role in several conferences, including tumor boards and monthly specialty conferences: Gastroenterology, Nephrology, Hematology, Gynecology and Dermatology.  Residents also participate in several resident-led conferences including Journal Club, Autopsy Conference, and Gross Conference.

The Pathology Laboratory is located on the second floor of the hospital. The department contains state-of-the-art equipment encompassing flow cytometry, electron microscopy, an in-house blood bank donor center, hemochromatosis clinic, and cytogenetics and molecular pathology laboratories. Modern facilities provide a pleasant work environment with dual resident rooms housing individual resident desks, computers, and microscopes.
