Wellness Classes & Events

Penrose-St. Francis Health Services offers a wide variety of fitness, wellness and health education classes to keep you and your family healthy.

Our programs are taught by experts throughout Penrose-St. Francis including the Health Learning Center, Health Incentive Improvement Program (HIIP) and corporate wellness program. Let us help you live healthy and live well!

January 1 through March 31, 2011

All classes require pre-registration / cancellation a minimum of 24 hours prior to the class. A $20 no show fee will be billed if registration is not cancelled 24 hours prior to the class. All wellness classes are held at the Penrose Health Learning Center, 1644 Medical Center Point (Union and Templeton Gap) unless otherwise noted. Our operating hours are from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information, call  719-776-3600. 

NEW!  Combination Physioball and Core Cardio Circuit Training - A tremendous full body and core workout.  Includes a variety of different exercises, equipment and circuit training options to firm,, tone, condition your body from head to toe.  Try it out!  You will enjoy the new challenge.

Cardio Kickboxing - This class will teach the basic techniques of kickboxing including punching, kicking, and other moves.  Class is held in a cardio-exercise format with focus on developing and maintaining cardiovascular endurance, balance and coordination.

T'ai Chi - A form of ancient Chinese martial arts that works to improve body awareness, strength and coordination.

NEW! Family Time for Wellness - Do you ever wish you could find a little more time for family activities that are wholesome for everyone?  Have we got the class for you and your kids!  Join us for this fun and innovative 4-week series that includes exercise, cooking, nutrition information and a very innovative "craft" session (for you guys...this includes work with duct tape!). Great for all ages and abilities.

NEW! Sports Nutrition 101 - Learn to fuel your body for your favorite activity.  Whether it is an aerobics class, weight lifting, running a marathon or playing soccer, prepare your body for the specific needs of the activity.

NEW!  Spirituality as Good Medicine:  Finding Soul in Everyday Medicine
Spirituality and its attending links to purposefulness, hope, and well-being is increasingly catching the attention of  patients, healers, and employers. A significant body of research has emerged which suggests a strong link between ones' beliefs and values and the healing process.  It also creates some remarkable discussion around the role of spiritual and the existential as they relate to causes for illnesses.   Come hear of these remarkable applications which make up the heart of healing.

Zumba - No experience or rhythm necessary. Latin based dance that is fast moving and lots of fun. A great cardio workout with lots of movement.

Fitting In Fitness - Fitting In Fitness will help individuals who just cannot seem to make it to the gym or to group classes at the end of their day. Exercises that can be done practically anywhere will be demonstrated and practiced, including some resistance band activities. The class will also allow participants to practice monitoring their own heart rate and to determine what level of exercise is right for them. Participants will be given a "barriers to exercise" quiz that will allow the person to identify what really is getting in the way of their physical activity.

NEW! Strategies To Wellness - Build and maintain a personal wellness program that makes a difference in your life and that of your family. GOAL - Believe wellness means living life wisely. It is the sincere hope that the tips and strategies included here will help you get on a path that leads to high-level welllness. Tips focus on nutrition and weight management, stress, family, safety, and financial wellness.

Join us for one or more months and get your workouts kick started under the guidance of our fitness experts. Call the registration number for an exercise intake appointment.

Individual Fitness Assessment - Measure your fitness levels against the national averages and note areas in which you excel and potential areas of need. A sub-max VO2 treadmill test as well as evaluations for flexibility, strength and strength endurance will be performed. Results will be reviewed and discussed with a fitness expert to help direct you in your future fitness goals.

YogaStretch - YogaStretch will move your whole body through a complete series of seated and standing yoga poses. Chair support is offered to safely perform a variety of postures designed to increase flexibility, balance and range of movement. Restorative breathing exercises and a final relaxation will promote stress reduction and mental clarity.

Aquatics Classes - The Penrose Health Learning Center in cooperation with Colorado Sports and Spine. A structured class 2-3 times per week concentrating on range of motion, overall strengthening and general cardiovascular conditioning. A recent study found that decreasing stress and increasing quality of life has greatly reduced the risk of cancer recurrence and death in breast cancer patients. The Penrose Cancer Center started the Complementary Breast Program to help women achieve this. The four core areas of focus include stress; physical activity; diet and survivorship.
