da Vinci® Robotic-Assisted Surgery

Surgeons at Penrose Hospital and St. Francis Medical Center are now using the da Vinci® Surgical System to perform robotic-assisted heart surgeries, prostatectomies and women's surgeries, such as hysterectomies, leading the way in state-of-the-art technology. By dramatically enhancing visualization, precision, control and dexterity, the da Vinci® System overcomes the limitations of traditional laparoscopic technology, helping physicians to perform complex surgery in a manner never before experienced. With enhanced surgical capabilities, physicians are now able to extend the benefits of minimally invasive surgery to the broadest possible range of patients. Benefits of robotic-assisted surgery include smaller incisions, less pain and trauma for patients, and a much faster recovery period.

"The da Vinci provides the power and ability of a computer between me and the patient," said Dr. John Mehall, M.D., PSF's Medical Director of Cardiovascular Robotic and Minimally Invasive Surgery.  "I can see better and do more ... all without opening the patient's chest, and by controlling the instrumentation from the outside.  The recovery time is also much quicker and gets people on their feet faster."

Enabling Technology
The da Vinci® Surgical System consists of an ergonomically designed surgeon's console, a patient-side cart with four interactive robotic arms, a high-performance vision system and proprietary EndoWrist® Instruments. Powered by state-of-the-art robotic technology, the surgeon's hand movements are scaled, filtered and seamlessly translated into precise movements of the EndoWrist Instruments. The System cannot be programmed, nor can it make decisions on its own. The da Vinci® Surgical System requires that every surgical maneuver be performed with direct input from our surgeons.

The da Vinci® Surgical System has been successfully used in tens of thousands of minimally-invasive procedures worldwide. More than 900 urological, gynecological oncology, and cardiac da Vinci procedures have been performed at Penrose-St. Francis since 2005, with almost 700 occurring since January 2008.

Safe and Effective
Surgeons and patients around the world have found da Vinci Surgery to be safe and effective minimally invasive treatment option for a range of complex conditions. In fact, roughly 3,000 peer-reviewed studies have been published demonstrating the clinical effectiveness of da Vinci Surgery.

The da Vinci System is used in several surgical specialties at Penrose-St. Francis including:
